A manifest for a melancholic tomorrow

The status-income disequilibrium of lower castes and lesser evils: technology is the new social delirium. Meritocracy; now we need the geek. Arts, culture, economy, politics - are we experimental and innovative? Progress and prosperity our perceived vanguard. Are we just weird or out-of-place? Cost-benefit analyse the now and postpone important decisions. Take a stand on everything, and leave it all at the table. What is desire and what is need? What is control and comfort zones? Reality slips away in lost time. Are we the crowd or the ashamed ones? This is just a job, I only sign papers. Entertainment, you say? The language of the masses. No, I'm not really hungry, thank you. Inadequate, inane little details. Nothing really hurts me anymore. Lacking and poor, the insane prevail. Nothing hurts me any more than this. Doubt ignorance, throw it out. Shortcomings are off the scale. Misgivings only for the devout. Once stout, now sculptures are fragile and pale. Melancholic bohemian bourgeoisie, the men of the future and their TV ideals. Frontiers without fixed guarantee - they framed their bliss in cold steel. Drowned in proletarian paranoia, the government halls filled with greed. In dire need of a purging perestroika are we, the leaders of the free. Creative boredom fed through I.V.; stoned lazy, there's nothing to see. Swept up in decrees and debris, I want to crawl back to the sea. Drag me down.

A brand new song and shit

When I dream I am still awake
I would like to sing
a song about the people I love
the future and the past
society and reality
when I dream I am still awake
when I dream I am still awake

When you run you are standing still
Do you remember open landscape
two thousand and three
stay stay stay with me
society and reality
When you run you are standing still
When you run you are standing still

Sometimes reality is too complex
for us to take
When we dream
we are still awake

A song that rhymes too much

Science and technology
Enhancing my reality
Sending a signal to E.T.
Please come and visit me

This slow world bores me
Wanna escape into the free
This slow world bores me
Wanna roam the galaxy

Reaching out for the stars
My mind is going out really far
Staying up through the night
Searching for a stellar sight

Reaching out for the stars
My mind is going out really far
Staying up through the night
Searching for a stellar sight

Like life from the cosmic string
I wanna evolve into something
Condensed dusty bubble in the star sea
Wanna revolve around more than debris

Probes and satellites and rockets
Pulp paperbacks in my pockets
Phantasm in my frontal lobe
Beaming me to other globes

Reaching out for the stars
My mind is going out really far
Staying up through the night
Searching for a stellar sight

First contact (a draft)

When I sleep I am still awake.

Are you looking at the stars? The stars are looking back at you.
I believe - I want to -
I believe in first contact.

Ode to 2009

"The golden platitudes"

The golden platitudes
When we caved in to fear
The broken attitude
When we let winter get near

High spirits and lost hope
In tall buildings reaching for the sky
Desperate sensations waiting to throw
Themselves to bottomless lies

The world shrugged
And our promises forgot
Every circle ends
And our promises repeat

A testament to the mood
The cold silence reaches us
An echo in the room
Empty space between walls

Make a monument of the sky
Raise a mirror to the sun
A heart totally eclipsed
Minute upon hour elapsed

Let the tide turn back again
Rendezvous of past tenses
Let the time pass without strain
Let go of present senses

The world shrugged
And our promises forgot
Every circle ends
And our promises repeat

... Happy 2010.

Xxmas

We hope you feel alright in a winter wonderland. Did you click the link and does the song play now? Good. We are busy doing other things, such as boring school work and not so boring fiction work (HC is writing a little scifi crime story, I've been told). We don't have any new songs pending for recording, but with a little luck, there should be some sort of new material in early 2010, already known as the year we make contact. First contact. Oh yeah.

We know you're not out there, but we would like you to contact us, if you have some sort of musical or lyrical idea. If you ever wrote a song, but didn't know how to sing it - mail us, and we could take a look at it. You will receive a grand 2% royalty for a song that no one will ever pay money to hear...... Come on, you can do it.

Cheers,
- Søren

(by the time you are reading this, the song is probably over. Funny tune, isn't it?)

George Fucking Lucas

Went to the racetrack and
went home with broken back
want speed want futurism
valley video visionary

yeah they were futurists,
and they were anarchists
take off, blast off
and go to the galaxy

far far away, far far away
far far away, far far away

ten year old with comic books
and the escapist serials
wanna be continued
wanna be illuminated

third hand images oh yeah
millenium mythology
oh the people on TV
they have pacified me

far far away, far far away
far far away, far far away

Welcome to the immoderate blog

Now that we have a blog up and running, we could use this for every kind of writing we feel like - recording songs is always fun, and reflecting on it is fun as well.
So far, we have made music with very few ressources, cheap equipment that makes a lo fi sound. The Immoderate Past are amateurs, and I don't believe in us as a professionel band in any way. I think it is important for people like us to make our own music, inspired by the artists we love, and inspired by our own lives. There is really no reason to do it, and our audience is very very small. It makes no sense, but it was never meant to make sense, as your emotions point you in an artistic direction. You are an artist if you want to.
The amateurish, shambling, untrained music is our piece to the world, and we of course hope you enjoy it as well as any music. I am a bit inspired by The Stuckist Manifesto in some ways, but amateurs don't really need manifestos. A few instruments, a few good ideas and fun with friends will do.

News: Remodeling

We just completely revamped the site's layout and moved text around - erased stuff, added stuff, erased stuff again.

In honour of this, some of the old songs will get remasters (/mixes, if need be) during the 2009/10 winter. More info to follow on this blog.

New song: "Station New City Grid"

Hi, all you jolly 'Past fans. We recorded a song about a week ago, and now we feel we're done mixing it to its fullest potential - with our somewhat limited knowledge of mixing at least.
(It was recorded in a tiny apartment and the Jag' guitar broke down, so it didn't turn out as twang'y as we would've liked it to be. Oh, well, perhaps we'll do another mix another time.)
Anyway, the song is a solemn, yet mournful tale of... well, we'll let _you_ figure that out. Clues: the metropolis, night-time, encounters, driving, magnitude, hollowness. We've already said too much.
Just listen, and enjoy.
And please let us know what you make of it.
